The city of Sombor will be strong again

On July 25, 2021, mayor of the city of Sombor, Antonije Ratković meet with the rabbi of Serbia – Isak Asiel, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia – Robert Sabadoš, and the president of the Jewish community of Sombor – Sandra Papo Fišer. The meeting was organized during the Inter-Community gathering in Sombor. Robert Sabados introduced Mr. Ratkovic with the work of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia, and the collaboration between FJC and the Republic of Serbia, in fighting Anti-Semitism. Rabbi expressed his hope that this gathering will not be the last, and that the small Synagogue will soon be renovated so that Shabbat services could be held there. The president of the Jewish community of Sombor pointed out that in the past two years this Jewish community has been very active in terms of cultural projects, such as the theatre play "Semper Idem", the exhibition "Traces in 30 Pictures – stories of Sombor Jewish families”, and the film "Porajmos".

The mayor was very pleased to host the Jewish Community leaders and pointed out that he has excellent cooperation with the Jewish community of Sombor. The City of Sombor always donates funds for the needs of religious communities, and the plan for this year will be the renovation of benches in the Small Synagogue.

After meeting, Ratković greeted guests in the County building. On that occasion he pointed out that the Jewish community in Sombor left a significant mark on the development of the city, and that he hopes "that together we can restore Sombor into an influential and financially strong city, as it once was."
