Under the auspices of the World Jewish Congress, leaders of the Jewish communities from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece, signed the "Memorandum of Understanding" on 12. June 2023, in Sofia.
The leaders of the four Jewish communities in the region made a joint commitment to work together in order to preserve the historical authenticity of the Jewish communities in the Balkans, especially the history of the Holocaust.
As stated in the text of the Memorandum, the signatories agreed to build a strong partnership in the field of education, i.e. creation of educational programs, intended for Jewish communities, educators, teachers, professors, as well as other educational experts in the formal and informal spheres of education.
All leaders, each in their own country, will work in a coordinated manner guarding the truth about Holocaust intact. Together, they will fight against all attempts at historical revisionism.
The signatories of the Memorandum, thus paid a tribute to 11,343 Jews from today's North Macedonia and Western Thrace in Greece, as well as to 160 Jews from the town of Pirot, Serbia, who were deported by the pro-Nazi Bulgarian forces and perished in the Holocaust. The tribute was also paid to 55,000 Jews from Greece, deported by Nazis.
