Gathering of the FJC Serbia Women’s Group: “Spring Awakening”
4.6.2021.

After a long break due to  Coronavirus, life finally returned to normal, which, to the great satisfaction, encouraged us to meet again. The support of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia made this high-quality event possible.

On Friday 28th May 2021, we gathered in the magic ambient of the special nature reserve, Obedska bara. Organizers of the event were Maja Slater, President of the JC Belgrade Women’s Group, and Mira Kon Panic, President of the FJC Serbia Women’s Group. This event symbolized an ode to joy, the awakening of the nature, and a reminder to all of us how important human life is.

What made this occasion even more special is the impressive number of 50 attendees, women members from the Jewish communities of Subotica, Novi Sad, Pančevo and Belgrade.

It was wonderful to meet dear friends again, and to share that incredible experience with them.

Rangers from the reserve were lovely hosts. We learned many interesting things about flora and fauna in Obedska bara, which is world-renowned as a paradise for birds. During our boat ride, we had the opportunity to watch the spring awakening in its most extraordinary shape  –  the flowering of beautiful white water lilies, flying of swamp birds, and water turtles.

Our tour guide from the „Meet the Serbia“ society, led us to the rustic and unique etno village Kupinovo, and the fortress Kupinik.

At the oldest part of the village Kupinovo, an etno park was formed from original and reconstructed objects. They represent a typical rural unity, distinctive for that part of Serbia. We listened to an interesting lecture - a true journey through history. Then we visited the etno complex and had a ride in the forest with an eco-friendly mini train. This was a real rest for body and soul.

The gathering continued in the etno restaurant Šanac, where we enjoyed freshly made home food from authentic recipes. The music band made the event even more unique – all of us sang together.

After a year of tension and quarantine this whole experience came as a great relief. We were reminded that small things make the life worth. Togetherness, friendship, love, kindness and community. These are things that truly matter, make us richer and make our lives more complete.

Thank you for the lovely experience we had, and see you soon!
